Smart City Initiatives

As the winner of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Smart City Challenge in 2016, Columbus was awarded $50 million in funding and the designation as America’s Smart City. We’re embracing the reinvention of transportation to accelerate human progress. And with it, the responsibility to be a teacher for cities as they evolve around the world.

Smart Columbus is managed through a public-private partnership of the City of Columbus and the Columbus Partnership, which are joined by more than 100 public, private and academic sectors in scaling our city’s smart city vision.

Mission

To accelerate human progress through open mobility.

Vision

To be the model for connected cities of the future.

2019 was a groundbreaking year in Columbus’ smart city journey. Self-driving shuttles traveled 19,000 miles on Columbus city streets. Hundreds of electric vehicle charging stations were brought online. More than $9.5 million in federal funds were spent on smart city projects, resident engagement reached more than 100,000, and regional investments in smart city innovation grew to more than $730 million since 2016.
